Discover Easily Accessible Hiking Trails

Lantau is hiking country and many of the best trails are easily accessible from DB. You can, for instance, jump on the Tinworth Trail which has a section called the Discovery Bay Neo Trail that leads from Sunny Bay to DB and continues to Pak Mong.

But The Tinworth is a big ask… not suitable for inexperienced hikers or families. Let’s say you want to scratch your legs one Sunday and make your way to Mui Wo for lunch.

Well, we’ve got you covered! We’ve detailed an easy hike via the Trappist Monastery and a slightly more ambitious one via Tiger’s Head.

NIM SHUE WAN TO MUI WO

Via the Trappist Monastery

Silver Beach
A Good Hike for Beginners

The trail from Nim Shue Wan to Mui Wo is steep in places but it’s easy enough to follow. The path is mostly paved, making it well-suited to families with little ones. Although not buggy-friendly (there are a lot of steps at the end), the path is, for the most part, scooter-friendly, which helps keep the kids' enthusiasm going!

DURATION: APPROXIMATELY 2.5 HOURS

FIND THE TRAIL

To find the trail, start at DB Plaza and head towards the Kai To pier near DB Marina. Just after you turn off the main road, you will see the path to Nim Shue Wan on your right. Follow the path, with the beach on your left. As you pass through the village, you will start to climb a hill. At the top of the hill, you will find Grandpa's Garden, an organic farm that sells a range of seasonal vegetables.

FOLLOW THE PATH

Follow the path and continue through the village. At one point, it will look like you are walking through someone's house, however, it is actually still a public path.

HEAD UPHILL

After passing through the village, head uphill, following signs for the Trappist Monastery. You will know you are heading in the right direction when you start to see the 12 Stations of the Cross on the trees at the side of the path. The monastery itself is a very peaceful place and is well worth a stop.

REACH THE TOP
Leaving the monastery, continue uphill until you reach the Chinese Pagoda – the top of your climb. After that, it's all downhill. This is where the steps come in – and lots of them! The steps bring you out at the far end of Silvermine Bay Beach. There, you can rest your weary legs before continuing on to Mui Wo – around a 15-minute walk along the beach.

DISCOVERY BAY ROAD TO MUI WO

Via the Tiger's Head

A Hiker's Dream

Tiger's Head, or Lo Fu Tau, provides a stunning backdrop to DB and is a hiker's dream. There are a number of starting places for this hike, at various points along Discovery Bay Road.

DURATION: APPROXIMATELY 3.5 HOURS

THE EASY ROUTE
From the north end, you can start behind Greenvale Village/ Neo Horizon. Although steep in places, this is one of the easier routes to the top. Alternatively, you can start the hike a little further down the road, opposite S.K.H. Wei Lun Primary School. Climb the set of steps that head uphill via the DB Lookout, a superb place to stop and take in the incredible view over the town.
THE CHALLENGING ROUTE
And there’s a third option: those who like a challenge can start at the bottom of Discovery Valley Road, which leads up towards Discovery Bay Golf Club. Follow the road as it winds uphill until you come to a path heading off towards DB Lookout on the right. After a couple of minutes, you will see a path through the grass on your left. This can be rather overgrown at times, but it soon becomes clearer as you ascend. This route to the top is a tough one, and you will need to use your hands to climb in places.

THE SUMMIT
At 465 metres, Tiger's Head summit offers incredible 360-degree views of Hong Kong, from the airport and New Territories in the north, to Hong Kong Island and the outlying islands in the south and west.

GO FURTHER

Once you're done taking in the view, continue west towards Mui Wo. The trail gets much easier from here, as it's all downhill. The scenery changes as you go, from open plains to wooded areas. After a few kilometres, you will reach the Olympic Trail. Take a left onto the trail and follow the path to Silvermine Waterfall. This is a lovely spot to rest for a while and cool tired feet.

THE VILLAGE

From there, continue towards Mui Wo, taking a left down the steps when you reach a fork in the road. You will come across more houses as you get closer to the village. When you reach Silvermine Bay, keep going and you'll end up in the centre of the village.
