Think tank suggests proposed East Lantau Metropolis is not big enough

On Tuesday August 7, think tank Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) argued that Hong Kong needs to reclaim a larger piece of land for the proposed East Lantau Metropolis (ELM) than the government has suggested.

Nonprofit organisation OHKF says that its aim is to promote the long-term and overall interests of Hong Kong and that with this in mind, it believes the land reclaimed should be twice the size of the initial proposal of 1,000 hectares.

If OHKF’s suggestion gains legs, it would see a new artificial island off Lantau built off the coast of Lantau measuring 2,200 hectares, which the group says would provide 400,000 homes and accommodate 1.1 million people.

The suggestion has not gone down well with local residents, who were already opposed to the initial proposal and are concerned about the impact such a development could have on the environment, as well as how it could change the Lantau landscape and lifestyle.
