Proposal for low floor double-decker buses to and from Mui Wo was “supported in principle”

New Lantao Bus Company (NLB) has put forward a proposal for the deployment of low-floor double-deckers on the 3M bus route, which goes between Tung Chung and Mui Wo.

The proposal was raised at the most recent Islands District Council meeting held on September 18, when it was outlined that the capacity of the current single-deck buses that serve the route is not enough to meet passenger demand. This causes problems for local residents, in particular South Lantau residents, who experience long waiting times at weekends, as well as public holidays and peak seasons, with buses departing at up to one-hour intervals at certain times.

Going forward, NLB is anticipating that demand will increase further, with the Ngan Kwong Wan Road West and Ngan Kwong Wan Road East residential developments in Mui Wo set to be completed by the third quarter of 2018.

In a comment to Life on Lantau, the Islands District Council has said that the proposal was “supported in principle” and holds a proposed implementation date for the second quarter of 2018.

As part of the proposal, NLB intends to offer ease of accessibility to the elderly and persons with disability by using vehicles with low-floor and barrier-free boarding facilities. It plans to purchase five new buses to achieve this.
