Social media was literally buzzing this weekend as Hong Kong residents shared some incredible snaps of Saturday night’s amazing storm.

The storm followed Hong Kong’s hottest day since 1968. The Hong Kong Observatory issued a thunderstorm warning at 6.45pm, recording 5,905 cloud-to-ground strikes before midnight, and a further 4,095 in the early hours of Sunday morning.Over 60% of the bolts struck Lantau Island and the New Territories. An additional 3,122 cloud-to-cloud strikes were recorded during the 12-hour display.

The storm set a new record, surpassing the previous high of 9,966 cloud-to-ground strikes over a 24-hour period, recorded in July 2005.

Further storms are expected during the first half of this week, with conditions set to improve from Wednesday.
