A taxi driver suspected of scamming passengers using counterfeit banknotes was detained yesterday, after officers found over HK$75,000 worth of fake banknotes in his Tung Chung home.

Officers conducted a search operation at the driver’s home in Yat Tung Estate on Wednesday night, following reports from numerous passengers who claimed that they had been scammed with fake notes earlier this month, totaling HK$1,700.

HK$76,500 worth of HK$500 notes was found in the driver’s flat.

Police also seized HK$6,000 worth of HK$500 notes, HK$700 worth of HK$100 bills and three stolen credit cards from the driver’s vehicle, amounting to over HK$82,000 worth of fake notes in his possession.

The driver was arrested for using and possessing bogus banknotes and theft.

The fake notes resembled real banknotes but had the words “practice banknote, sample, circulation forbidden” printed on the right corner. Such notes indicate that they were used as training tools by banking and financial institutions.

Authorities are working to trace the source of the counterfeit notes and further investigations are being made as to whether the driver is involved in other scamming cases.

Members of the public who suspect that they are victims of scams involving counterfeit money can call the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre’s 24-hour hotline at 18222.
