Friendly and welcoming, Café Solo offers Chinese food and cakes with a view. Sit out on the terrace above the water and watch the world go by. All tips go to supporting local, disadvantaged students.
Every now and again you come across a little gem and Café Solo is that that! It was my first trip to Hong and I went on the ferry to Tai O with my stepdaughter. She promised I would love it – and I did. The whole place had a lovely atmosphere and we had a great day there with a quick boat trip round the fishing village and out to sea beyond the harbour. We were keen to have some lunch and were drawn in by the wonderful smell of coffee coming from Café Solo. There was a limited menu choice but it was perfect for lunch I had shrimp roe noodles with pork neck and it was delicious. I also ordered the speciality coffee ( which I was told was South American) and it did not disappoint. But most of all this lovely little establishment scores highly on service and its lovely setting with a veranda over the water. We sat in the sunshine and had one of those magical experiences you never forget. There were local families enjoying lunch together and everyone was enjoying themselves. The owner Timmy So gave us a book of photos of the island – and we found a page about him, which was great to read. We had a chat and he gave me a couple of postcards of the island which I thought was a nice touch. I wish I had had more time to talk to him and I am sure that I would have gone back for another lunch had we been able to fit it in. It is a place and café I would recommend to anyone and I am sure that they would not be disappointed. Thank you Timmy for a very special welcome and I hope to return one day.
