A teenager drowned while swimming off of Cheung Sha beach on the southern coast of Lantau island on the evening of July 9.

According to the South China Morning Post, the young adult had sat the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary education this year, meaning he would have received his examination results the following day.

He had been swimming outside the beach’s safety net with his two friends. They called the police at around 6pm after one of them noticed their friend was missing.

RTHK reports that firefighters and marine police organized a search operation, but when they found the young man he had already lost consciousness. Police also found his surfboard on the beach, according to the Post.

He was rushed to North Lantau Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7.51pm.

Swimmers on beaches supervised by the Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) are recommended to stay within the safety nets at all times when in the water. The summer hours ( of LCSD lifeguards (April-October) are 9am-6pm on weekdays and 8am-7pm on weekends and public holidays.
