YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College (YHKCC) experienced some significant sporting successes through December and January, with its teams doing well in rugby, football and basketball.
At the 2015-16 HKSSF Inter-School Rugby Sevens Championships at King’s Park on December 5, the A/B Girls won the preliminary round of the All Hong Kong Rugby Sevens Competition. The A Boys also went well, coming runner-up in the Inter-School Rugby Championships (N.T. Region). This was the best ever result in this competition for the A Boys.
Both teams will now compete in the final round of the All Hong Kong Rugby Sevens Competition in May, with the girls going in as defending champions and the boys looking to build on last year’s second place.
Out of the tournament, 13 players were selected for representative sides that took part in the HKRFU New Year’s Day Tournament. Brothers Mark (U19) and Anthony (U14) Coebergh won Man of the Match awards, while Mark recently returned from a successful Asian U20 Tournament where Hong Kong were the overall winners.
On December 20, the A grade football team took out the Inter-School HKSSF Football Competition (Tsuen Wan and Islands District) for the second year in a row with a resounding 6-0 win in the final.
After a commanding 7-1 win in the semi-final, the team made a confident start to the decider and, led by four goals from Hilario Pun, took a comfortable half-time lead. There was no slowing down after the break as YHKCC powered on to complete an undefeated tournament and take the championship.
The team will now represent the Tsuen Wan and Islands District in the All Hong Kong Football Tournament to be held in late February.
YHKCC’s basketball teams won four trophies in the Islands District 3-on-3 Basketball Competition on January 10. Three senior boys and two junior boys teams participated in the competition, with the senior boys coming in second and third and the junior boys dominating to take first and second spot.
