The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) announced yesterday that Hong Kong has officially entered the winter flu season.

Over the past week, the city’s seasonal influenza activity has risen and has exceeded the baseline level, according to the CHP.

A total of 24 adult severe influenza cases have been reported up until January 9, causing 10 deaths. Seven of the victims were over the age of 65, while the other three were aged between 50 and 64.

However, it is noted that these cases may have been caused by other acute medical conditions or underlying diseases that could’ve affected the flu.

According to a spokesman for the CHP, it’s expected that the local seasonal influenza activity will continue to rise in the coming weeks and remain high for some time.

Members of the public, particularly children, the elderly and chronic disease patients, are encouraged to observe strict personal, hand and environmental hygiene.
