Water quality of Lantau beaches all rated ‘Good’ in latest grading

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) released the latest grading of water quality last week, and Lantau beaches came off well. The latest figures gave the majority of beaches, including Discovery Bay, Lower Cheung Sha, Pui O, Tong Fuk and Upper Cheung Sha, a rating of ‘Good’.

Silvermine Bay Beach was the exception to this, being unclassified as the beach is temporarily closed for improvement works under the Signature Project Scheme (Islands District). The beach is expected to reopen in mid-2018.

A rating of ‘Good’ is the highest of four levels and is characterised by an E. Coli count ranging of or below 24 parts per 100ml, which is unlikely to cause minor illnesses for every 1,000 swimmers.
