Click and call cab service Uber has taken the decision to raise their fares across Hong Kong after an “evaluation of the marketplace,” Marketing Interactive reports.

Fares have risen as much as 80% in Kowloon and the Northern Territories, where the cheapest available fare for an UberX or UberAssist has spiked from HK$25 to HK$45.

Uber stated that this was in part due to the implementation of a new HK$5 booking fee to “cover administrative costs.”

The minimum fare for an UberBLACK or 7-seater vehicle has risen 20% from HK$50 to HK$60.

During a police crackdown in May of 2017, 22 Uber drivers were arrested in Hong Kong on suspicion of having no hire car permits or third-party insurance. Uber saw a sharp decline in willing drivers immediately following the crackdown.

Netizens are speculating that the price hikes may be being used to entice more drivers to operate in Hong Kong after the arrests.
