There’s a new baby in town!

Parents across Hong Kong will be delighted to hear that there is a new store in town, bringing a wide range of children’s products to the city – welcome, Baby Basics!

The idea came about following the closure of Bumps to Babes, where Baby Basics founders Arati Limbu and Anuradha Limbu Chettri worked for over a decade. The sisters’ vision was to follow in the footsteps of Bumps to Babes and fill the gap in the market to bring the best international child-related products to parents and parents-to-be in Hong Kong.

“We wanted to continue to do what we love. We wanted to revive the business and continue the legacy that Bumps to Babes created, but with revisions and improvements,” Arati says.

“We vowed to do whatever it took to see this project through. We found a group of five investors who were keen on taking on a new concept and embarking on this journey with us. We are so lucky that they believe in our team and give us enough freedom to run our company the way we want to.”

Meet the team

Originally from Nepal, Arati and Anuradha began working on their new concept in March 2018. In May, the Baby Basics website was launched, and four months later, on September 27, the brand new shop was opened in Central.

Ensuring that every team member had previous experience in their line of work, the duo recruited ex-staff from Bumps to Babes and saw to it that they shared the same passion for helping customers. There are currently 11 individuals that make up the team, with an average of 12 to 13 years of experience.

“Our staff are all very professional and well informed about the products. Our sales team can help gauge what products will appeal to customers, and our logistics team knows the city like the backs of their hands. One feature that we’re very proud of is that we have our own delivery team. We want to ensure that our products are in the best condition when they arrive at our customers’ doors. And if they have any questions or need help assembling items, the delivery team can help with that.

“What sets us apart from other stores is our value-added service. We are working to establish a community where we develop relationships with our clients and help them find the best solutions for their needs. We’re continuously working to be more accessible. Right now, customers can get in touch through the website, WhatsApp and Facebook, as well as other social media accounts.”

A diverse product range

The variety of products on sale at Baby Basics is huge, covering everything from maternity products to baby essentials and toys for kids up to four years. The range, which is set to expand in the coming months, includes highlights such as UK brand Childs Farm, offering eco-friendly toiletries, and WaterWipes, from Ireland, which produces chemical-free baby wipes.

And starting in November, with Christmas fast approaching, there will be a number of holiday promotions where customers will be able to enjoy HK$50 off for purchases over HK$1,000 and HK$100 off for purchases over HK$2,000.

What’s coming up?

“The next phase of our project includes updating our website to make it more technologically advanced,” Arati says. “The plan is to make it more interactive and at the same time fun, informative and user friendly. We are continuously working towards being a one-stop shop for parents in Hong Kong.

“We’re also thinking of holding pop-up events on outlying islands where parents can pre-order items for collection. This gets round the issue of a minimum purchase for door-to-door deliveries.

“We’re thankful for the positive feedback. Parents are happy that familiar brands are now back in stock and they’re enjoying the convenience factor too.

“We are all trying to make a living while doing what we love. This is where our expertise lies, and we want to use our experience and knowledge about the industry to give the best possible service and support parents on their journey.”
