In Hong Kong to promote the upcoming Broadway spectacular The Illusionists, world-renowned magician Luis De Matos wowed Discovery College’s year fives with a few of his best tricks last Wednesday, March 2.
Luis, The Master Magician in The Illusionists, found time in his busy promotional schedule to put on a captivating performance for the DC kids and thoroughly enjoyed what he said was an unexpected trip out to Discovery Bay. “I think it’s great,” Luis says. “To be able to share ideas and magic with a crowd that is so young but has such cool behaviour was really, really nice. I hope they had as much fun as I did.”
The ultimate showman, Luis is regarded as Portugal’s most distinguished magician of all time and has been practising magic for most of life, with his professional career spanning over two decades.
“Back in Portugal I have been doing television for 25 years now and every three years we have a new one-man theatre show that we tour with, both in Portugal and in Spain,” Luis says. “Three years ago I was invited to headline this show, The Illusionists 2.0 version. It’s an amazing show and has been traveling the world and getting rave reviews.”
The Illusionists, the biggest selling magic show in Broadway history, is showing at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from April 14-24 and Luis, who’s next stop on the promotional tour is Bangkok, is looking forward to returning.
“I can’t wait,” Luis says. “I think Hong Kong is a really unique city. It’s fascinating.” The show itself has taken all before it, selling out theatres across the globe. “It’s a show that has been breaking records both in Broadway and the West End and around the world and the reason why, I honestly believe, is because first of all magic is for all ages, magic is a universal language, magic is for the entire family,” Luis says. “That’s one thing. The other is that they (the producers) really went out of their way in order to choose the acts they thought more suitable. That could not only be good individually but could also represent a very good ensemble when put together.”
On top of the brilliant cast, that includes The Escapologist, The Enigma and The Manipulator, the show features a world-class set design, a stunning light design, an original soundtrack and a great director.
“You take amazing ingredients and then you package them into all those things that big venues really look for,” Luis says. “I believe it’s the first time a magic show of this scale comes to Hong Kong, so I’m very excited.”
