A 38-year-old man was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport with 1.25kg of suspected cocaine worth $1.3 million.

Hong Kong Customs seized the cocaine from a man arriving from Johannesburg via Doha on Friday.

The man, who gave his occupation as a graphic designer, was carrying a briefcase which was emptied during the customs clearance.

Customs then instigated a search of the briefcase based on the weight after it was emptied.

An in-depth examination led to the discovery of two slabs of suspected cocaine concealed inside the false compartment of the briefcase.

The man was charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and was due to appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Court.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
