Say no to glow sticks this Mid-Autumn Festival

Posted in : News on by : Around DB Comments: 0

DB residents are calling for a boycott of glow sticks this coming Mid-Autumn Festival, encouraging revellers to celebrate with more traditional paper lanterns instead.

Supported by green groups Plastic Free Seas and DB Green, the ‘Be Bright’ campaign hopes to reduce the amount of environmentally harmful plastics and toxins as a result of glow sticks, and encourage the use of more environmentally friendly recyclable materials such as paper.

Netizens commented that the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2016 saw a marked improvement on the amount of glow sticks present, but some DBers were still finding the sticks littering hiking trails and remarked on the environmental impact for such a fleeting moment of celebration.

Festival goers are being challenged to come up with their own ways to create celebratory lights, with suggestions including lightsabers, flashlights and re-usable cloth in order to reduce the amount of landfill produced.
