Protests explode at the start of CNY!

Posted in : News on by : Around DB Comments: 0

Unfortunately, Hong Kong welcomed the year of the Monkey with violence! Rioters clashed with police overnight and into the early hours of Tuesday in the shopping heart of Kowloon.

The unrest, also called the “fishball revolution” by newspapers around the world, started when HK authorities tried to prevent street food sellers from operating on Monday night. The hawkers, who did not have a license to operate their street stall, were defended by citizens visiting the Chinese New Year night market.

Protesters were covered in blood alongside injured policemen; warning shots were fired in the air. Police reports 50 people arrested and almost 100 injured.

This is the worst violence seen in Hong Kong since the Occupy Movement in 2014.
