On Sunday August 12, secretary for development Michael Wong Wai-lun reported on his blog that the plans for the Tung Chung New Town Extension feature bird-watching hides, walking trails and butterfly gardens. The features are intended to allow the public to enjoy the riverside scenery in Tung Chung.
Tung Chung’s expansion will also feature a riverside park at Tung Chung Valley, with the aim of conserving the ecology of the river. Wong also said Tung Chung Valley will set up a sustainable urban drainage system, which is a natural approach to managing drainage and something that is new to Hong Kong.
Over on the eastern bank of the river, the government plans to build residential complexes, which green groups worry will threaten the ecology of Tung Chung’s river.
The first phase of the New Town Expansion was launched at the end of December last year and it is expected that the entire project will be completed by 2030.
