Reuse and recycle

If you’re not sure how to start with greener living, why not start with your own home?

Be honest – how many household items have you simply thrown away this year? Here are a few ways to recycle those items, not only benefiting others but helping to save the environment in the process.

DB Mothers and Friends

Founder of DB Mothers & Friends, Nikki Boot is on a quest to make Hong Kong a better place – one sofa at a time. A popular local organisation, DB Mothers & Friends collects unwanted household items and furniture and re-distributes it to the poor and needy in Hong Kong. So far, the group has collected some 378 tonnes of useful second-hand goods from more than over 1,000 DB homes.

The group also holds weekly ‘Charity Saturday’ events, providing a door-to-door collection service by appointment. Meanwhile, residents can also drop off their unwanted items at La Costa playground when a session is announced on Facebook.

Flea markets

Every three months the DB Flea Market in DB Plaza is stocked by households who want to lighten their load. “All DB residents can join the flea market at a cost of HK$150 per stall, and we do not charge charity booths,” says organiser Emily Luen of Discovery Bay Commercial Services. “It’s been held for over seven years, to provide a weekend activity for residents and promote green living.”

Those wanting to reuse and recycle should also watch out for the regular flea markets put on by DB’s 14 Village Owners’ Committees (VOC). Midvale VOC organises a regular plant market cum flea market and Siena Two B VOC hosts a regular barbeque and flea market where residents are given a blanket area on a Saturday afternoon for HK$20 where they can sell household items. Siena Two B also organises a twice-yearly furniture exchange, where people who have items of unwanted furniture can leave them at designated locations in the village and exchange them for items they do want.
