A man carrying a bag of 167 turtles has been arrested at Hong Kong International Airport.
Hong Kong Customs officials seized the suspected black pond turtles, an endangered species, worth about $280,000.
The 21-year-old man was arriving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when an X-ray of his check-in baggage showed suspicious images.
An inspection of his baggage revealed the turtles.
The man was arrested on Friday and the case handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
Importing an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
