Yesterday, it was reported that an employment agency was fined HK$10,000 by the Eastern Magistrates Court after Foreign Domestic Helpers, the Employment Agencies Administration (EAA) and the Labour Department realised the agency was illegally overcharging the FDH.
According to Hong Kong law, employment agencies for Foreign Domestic Helpers can only take 10% of a job seeker’s first month salary if they get a successful placement with an employer.
The Employment Agencies Administration (EAA) and the Labour Department received complaints that Vicks Maid Consultant Company, with offices located in Sha Tin was overcharging commission from job seekers. Vicks also failed to get a license for the new Sha Tin premises and was also fined HK$4000 for operating without a legal licence.This is the third tme that an employment agency for domestic helpers is convicted of overcharging job seekers this year.
The previous agencies convicted this year are Bagus Employment Agency in Central and Satisfactory Employment & Travel Centre Limited in Tai Wai. In the latter case, the agency was fined HK$8,400 at Sha Tin Magistracy and was also ordered to refund excessive placement fees to the foreign domestic helpers involved.
