A more elaborate 3D scale model of the proposed Lantau development plans was recently presented to Chinese state leader Zhang Dejiang during his three-day visit to Hong Kong.
The particular model was noticeably different from any featured in public engagement activities held by the Lantau Development Advisory Committee (LanDAC), according to members of environmental groups, and a district councillor.
Footage released by Hong Kong’s Information Services Department shows Zhang with among others Secretary for Development Paul Chan and Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, overlooking the model in question, showing reclamation around the islands of Hei Ling Chau and Kau Yi Chau — part of the proposed East Lantau Metropolis — with what appears to be buildings, roads and railways connecting to nearby Lantau and Hong Kong Island.
Protesting parties have since decried the government’s apparent withholding of information from the public, and lack of transparency. The extent of island reclamation has not been revealed on LanDAC’s website, nor had it during public consultation, which ended in April 30. Its findings are expected to be released no earlier than August.
