Local talent shines at The BIG Picnic 2016!

Back with a brand new name, and bigger and better than ever, DB’s very own rock festival, The BIG Picnic, made a triumphant debut at its new central-DB venue this weekend, showcasing the very best of local talent.

From rock bands to acoustic singers to dance acts and more, The BIG Picnic had something for everyone, split across three stages at Tai Pak Wan and DB Plaza.

The biggest event of its kind ever seen in DB, the festival attracted thousands of revelers from near and far and created an amazing buzz within the community, as party-goers young and old danced their way from morning until night, fuelled by top-notch food and drinks.

Of course, an event of this scale doesn’t just come together overnight, and huge thanks need to go to the event organisers – Steve Garrett, Nick Flavell, Belinda Howard, Ricky Cumes, and Mona Gadalla-Carter. Together, the team worked tirelessly for months, volunteering their time to make The BIG Picnic the massive success that it was.

Speaking after the event, the team were, quite rightly, delighted with how the day unfolded:

“Our first annual Big Picnic exceeded all the team’s expectations. Myself, Nick, Belinda, Ricky and Mona, along with all the volunteers, were all thrilled with the event’s success. I have to hand it to the bands and the fans of Picnic though. Their great love of live music gets everyone out here all day to enjoy it! Special thanks to HKRI, DB Management, and DB VOC, along with the residents of the plaza and beach village. Thank you for your support! Can’t wait till next year!!”

“What a great event we had! The team is so happy that all the hard work we put in paid off. People love the new location and vibe of the event. We had great talent on the stages this year, and also an amazing team of volunteers. For once we got lucky with the weather! DB Community: Thank you for supporting The Big Picnic!”
– Mona Gadalla-Carter – TBP Organizing Team Member

“Y-Rock had a fabulous time! We were all overwhelmed by the smiles and warm reaction from the crowds at each of the three stages. This felt like a true community event in the Plaza. It also felt like a real ‘rock festival’ on the beach!”
– Belinda Howard – TBP Organizing Team Member

“The event was a huge success and showed the phenomenal spirit of community here in Discovery Bay. Great music, great dance, great party! My thanks go the The BIG Picnic organizing team and all those volunteers who came out to help.”
– Nick Flavell – TBP Co-Chair

“Our fantastic sponsors always support this event and Saturday was no exception. None of this could happen without the generous support of our sponsors; we are grateful.”
– Ricky Cumes – TBP Organizing Team Member

The team also expressed their thanks to the organisers of Picnic in the Park (PiP), The BIG Picnic’s predecessor, which paved the way for 2016’s mega event. Over 10 years, Jim Alba-Dulgnan, Mark Rawson, Sally Leonard, Mark Basford and Jerri Wiseman took PiP from a small community gathering to a full-on rock festival to make DB proud.

And of course, the festival simply wouldn’t have been what it was without the incredibly talented local acts, who dedicated hours and hours of rehearsal time to put on a first-class show for the crowds, as well as the fans themselves, whose support and enthusiasm helped to raise much-needed funds for local charities Plastic Free Seas, Kely Support Group and Hong Kong Student Aid Society.

Well done DB! We can’t wait for next year!
