Authorities are investigating whether a rubber tyre caused a ferry accident which left 124 people in hospital.

The South China Morning Post reported the Turbojet ferry was travelling from Macau to Hong Kong on Sunday night when the accident at Siu A Chau, south of Lantau, occurred about 7pm.

The ferry broke down and water started seeping in after it struck an unknown object, with the impact leaving 124 people injured after they were thrown from their seats.

The tyre was retrieved near where the accident occurred.

It is believed to be a vessel fender, used to prevent damage during berthing, which fell into the sea.

The South China Morning Post reported it had been taken for investigation by the Marine Department.
