The Transport and Housing Bureau has approved plans by the Airport Authority to develop the Airport North Commercial District, a large-scale retail, dining and entertainment destination.

First proposed in May 2015, the development will be one of the largest retail destinations in Hong Kong. The site, which covers over 10 hectares, was previously used as a golf club and car park.

In a statement on its website, the government said that it had “allowed the area to be carved out from the original airport land lease and put under a new contract with a 50-year term granted to the authority at a nominal premium.” They went on to say that “the development is of strategic importance to the economic and social development of Lantau and Hong Kong, and will be a major component in promoting the “bridgehead economy” of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.”
