DB residents have reacted with dismay this week to the news that Fresh Fruit Juice Paradise in DB Plaza will close in July.

Customers became aware of the closure over the weekend, when a hand-written notice was placed in the shop window. The sign reads:

“Dear customers, According to the inflation and tenancy agreement will be expired, we will close our business on mid July, 2018. Thank you for your kind support in the past years.”

Posting on social media, and in messages sent to Around DB, local residents expressed sadness and anger that the long-standing shop is having to close.

“The juice shop is one of the few independent shops we have left in DB,”  one DB resident wrote. “It is part of our community, part of our history. It is one of the few shops that residents actually want, and now it is going. This is a sad day for DB.”

Others agreed. “My kids absolutely love the juice store,” says Laura. “The owner is so nice. She knows their favourite drinks off by heart, and always greets us with a smile. It’s my go-to place for healthy drinks in DB. I wish there was something we could do to stop this.”

The news comes just over two years after the community mourned the death of the shop’s owner, Sam Kwok, who founded the store 20 years ago.

Responding to suggestions by some residents that the shop was closing due to a rental increase, a spokesperson for HKR said,  “HKR was informed by the tenant that owing to operation difficulties, she has decided not to renew the lease upon its expiry.  In this regard, no negotiation on lease terms has ever taken place.  Hence, the accusation that the closure of the shop is forced by HKR is not true”.
