Environmental group urges government to protect dragonfly and damselfly environment on Lantau

The environmental group Green Power is urging the government to do more to protect dragonflies and damselflies on Lantau, after it was revealed that around half of the species that can be found in Hong Kong live on Lantau.

According to the results of a recent survey by the group, there are 67 species of dragonfly and damselfly on the island, however the environmentalists warn that large-scale developments are posing a threat to local habitats.

Elaine Yuen Yan-Ling, senior education and conservation officer for Green Power, pointed out that Lantau has a diverse range of freshwater habitats, such as hill streams and abandoned farmland in lowland areas, which is required by the flies to survive.

However, she warned that these lowland rivers and wetlands, including reed beds and mangroves, are under threat due to large developments and man-made destruction in the area. According to Green Power, illegal dumping and wastewater discharge from nearby areas have caused watercourses to become polluted, destroying the species’ habitat.

The green group is now urging the government to protect Lantau’s watercourses from such activities in the hope of conserving the dragonfly and damselfly species.
