Despite passing exams in aerospace medicine in the United Kingdom and Australia, a family doctor based in Discovery Bay admitted to falsely claiming credentials in the field on April 26, Tuesday.
The general practitioner pled guilty to three charges of professional misconduct before the Medical Council of Hong Kong, according to a report by the South China Morning Post.
Aerospace medicine addresses ailments specific to individuals constantly in flight, such as pilots and other aviation professionals. The doctor claimed between 2013 and 2014 that he had obtained a certificate and diploma in the field, according to the Civil Aviation Department’s complaint. It was established however that had not completed the diploma course, nor does his prior certification officially qualify him to administer aerospace medicine in Hong Kong.
In defense, his lawyer told the council that while the doctor is substantially immersed in aerospace medicine, he did not know that his UK and Australia credentials were not recognised in the city. He then had his aviation doctor title taken down from the web as well as removed from personal chops, following admonishment by the Civil Aviation Department.
Residents on the other hand have voiced their displeasure with the news, and vouched for the doctor’s capability as a physician. Bay Media has thus far not been able to get in touch with the doctor, but hopes to speak with him soon to hear his side of the story
