A herd of cattle tried to rescue a bull which had been hit by a car at the weekend.

Cows roaming on the beaches and through the main street is a familiar sight on Lantau. In the slow-paced villages with little in the way of traffic, the herds are able to move about in relative safety.

But the South China Morning Post reported that a bull was hit by a 4-wheel-drive in Ma On Shan on the weekend when crossing the road.

The collision left the cow with a broken front right leg and it fell on its side, unable to move off the road. Touchingly, its herd surrounded it, rubbing it with their faces.

The animals refused to budge, even when traffic surrounded them.

The 33-year-old driver of the vehicle called police and officers from Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals arrived at the scene, but were unable to save the animal.
