A Tung Chung bus driver has received a suspended sentence after hitting and killing a 38-year-old man in North Lantau last January.

The man was on his way to work in Discovery Bay where he worked as a chef. He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to North Lantau Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival.

Based on camera footage of the incident, the bus was travelling at an approximate speed of 10km/h as it pulled into the bus terminal at Yat Tung Estate. According to Apple Daily, the court was told that the driver’s view had been obscured by vehicle permits on the windscreen.

Speaking on behalf of his client, the defendant’s lawyer said that he is in need of psychological counselling as a result of the accident and does not want to drive again. Instead he is seeking an office-based role to maintain a source of income.

In the court ruling, the judge said that the loss of life was tragic, but that because the driver was travelling within the speed limit, and taking into account the blind spot, a four month jail sentence, suspended for two years and a fine of HK$5,000 was appropriate.
