Big delays at Lantau Link as new toll system comes into effect

Huge traffic jams have formed heading back towards the Tsing Ma Bridge this morning after the government’s new two-way toll system at the Lantau Link came into effect.

The Transport Department is urging travellers to use rail connections to Lantau where possible. A statement on its website reads, “Due to heavy traffic, Lantau Link Airport bound is congested. Members of the public are advised to use public transport to Lantau Island and the airport. Early planning of journeys to allow more travelling time is also advised to avoid unexpected delay.”

Under the new system, drivers must pay each time they pass through the tolls, whether travelling to or from Lantau. Previously, drivers would not pay on entry, but would pay the full toll charge on exiting.

The changes to the charges have been introduced in preparation for the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

In a statement earlier this month, a government spokesperson said, “Upon the commissioning of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Lantau Link will no longer be the only vehicular road to Lantau, and thus changing the current one-way toll collection arrangement to a two-way one is necessary to prepare for the commissioning of the bridge.”
