Beware of Fake Monks around Tung Chung

Posted in : News on by : Around DB Comments: 0

Recently, Lantau residents have noticed a lot of “Buddhist monks” around Tung Chung, begging for donations/ money.

Don’t be fooled by these individuals! Fake Buddhist “monks” with shaven heads, wearing saffron robes and carrying brass begging bowls are targeting visitors and expats in tourist areas mainly in Central, Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui. But more recently, we also see them in Tung Chung.

Some are claiming to be from a religious group seeking donations for a new temple. It is actually against the law to beg for money (or ask for donations) on the streets of Hong Kong. These individuals can be arrested on site. The Hong Kong Buddhist Association spokesman said that “real monks are not in the streets begging.” as reported by Oriental Daily.
