Ban on Philippine domestic helpers cleaning windows to come into effect for new contracts from October 15

Following a number tragic of incidents in recent months involving domestic helpers falling to their deaths from high-rise buildings, the Philippine Consulate of Hong Kong has announced that it will add a new clause to employment contracts from October 15, specifying that window cleaning will not be part of their duties.

In an interview with RTHK, Erman Villanueva, Secretary General of United Filipinos in Hong Kong, said that he hopes the Indonesian consulate will implement similar measures soon, eventually leading the Hong Kong government to introduce a full ban on window cleaning for all workers.

The changes come after thousands of domestic workers took part in a protest in early September to call for a ban to be brought in after the death of a 35-year-old woman in Tseung Kwan O.
