Amy Yung launches petition to reduce Discovery Bay Ferry fares

While a number of ferry services from Hong Kong to the outlying islands are set to cut fares in July, Discovery Bay Ferry has thus far made no announcement of any fare reduction.

Island District Councilor for Discovery Bay Amy Yung reached out to the local community online to shed light on the matter.

New World First Ferry Services Limited, with routes from Central to Mui Wo and Cheung Chau and from North Point to Hung Hom and Kowloon City, as well as Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry Holdings Limited which sails to Lamma Island, Peng Chau, and Hei Ling Chau from Hong Kong, are reducing fares by 10 percent, following the drop in oil prices.

As Discovery Bay ferries also receive subsidies from Hong Kong’s Transport Department, the petition implores the ferry service to immediately follow suit, as well exercise more transparency with regard to its revenues and expenditures.

Since it was launched on April 28, late Thursday afternoon, the petition has achieved more than a quarter of its goal of 1,000 signatures.
