Recent statistics by the Hong Kong Police Force reveal that almost a third of traffic accidents in Hong Kong in 2016 involved the injury of pedestrians.
For those of you on the Island regularly, this serves as a reminder to be mindful of pedestrian safety. The Road Safety Council advises members of the public not to rush while crossing the road, to make sure to find a safe location to pass if no crossing facility is available and to remain alert at all times.
Last month, the police set forth a crackdown on jaywalkers across Hong Kong as part of a “territory-wide operation to promote pedestrian safety”. A total of 1,120 pedestrians were summoned for failing to comply with road traffic regulations with the majority failing to observe a light signal.
