Transform the look of your living space with these simple yet effective home decor ideas.
Whether you’ve just arrived in Hong Kong and need to deck out your new place or you’re simply tired of looking at the same old walls, with the right tricks and tips, creating a stylish home can be easier than you think.
In fact, furnishing a home is not dissimilar to putting together a wardrobe – you have your staple items: sofas, dining room furniture and so on, and you have your accents – the items that make your look ping.
All too often, however, we stick with the same accessories for years on end, we get used to seeing them, and we miss out on the pleasure that can come from changing things up a bit.
So, how do you go about updating your home interior? Start with the basics: What colours do you like? What is your style? What kind of life do you lead? Do you have kids? Do you have pets?
Consider your staples and layer on top the extras and seasonal items – yes, seasonal! Hong Kong goes from cold and damp in winter to hot and humid in summer, so, provided you have the storage space, how about switching cushions and curtains accordingly and layering in some throws and carpets?
Begin with the things you love and work around them. Perhaps you have a favourite rug or picture, or a striking piece of furniture – make that the focal point and build up from there, picking out colours to complement or contrast.
Another good tip is to try and incorporate some symmetry for balance. Lamps are great for this and have the added benefit of creating a cosy setting and adding intimacy.
Don’t be afraid to include things that may be a bit offbeat either – your home is a reflection of your personality, so think laterally. Lantau’s beaches often throw up lovely sculptural bits and pieces that may add character to a room.
If you find yourself struggling for inspiration, search through Pinterest for refreshing ways to mix things up. A lick of paint here, a cushion there, a quirky ornament on a shelf – all small changes, but they can make a big difference. Just experiment, and have fun!
