As the city prepares for the approach of Super Typhoon Mangkhut, here’s some tips on what you can do to protect yourself, your neighbours and your home this weekend:

– Take loose items off your roof, balcony and garden and move them indoors.

– Secure outdoor furniture as these can be blown away due to high winds. One option is to secure these items with sandbags.

– Clear the drains on your roof, balcony or ground floor as clogged drains can lead to flooding.

– Have towels ready and monitor your windows for leakage inside your home.

–  If you think important documents and other valuables may be prone to leakage, secure them in a plastic or air-lock bag.

– Get electronics off the floor in case of flooding or leakage.

– Make sure everything re-chargeable is charged and stock up on extra batteries for battery-powered devices.

– Prepare torches and other relevant supplies, should there be a power outage.

– Keep curtains, shutters and blinds closed as it may help to prevent further damage should there be flying debris during high winds.

– Prepare pet carriers to move your pets indoors. Have pet supplies set aside in a safe and easily accessible place as this can be a frightening time for your pet. Be sure to set up a place for your animal to relieve themselves.

– Check in with neighbours and keep emergency numbers handy.

– If you have a car or bicycle, move them to safety. Avoid areas with expected winds, such as the ferry pier or low lying areas. Avoid parking cars and bicycles near power lines or trees.

– Stock up on food, water and household supplies.

– Fill your bathtub with water in case of water disruption.

– Stay in a safe area of the house. Avoid rooms or areas with large and exposed windows and glass.

The Hong Kong Observatory also reminds the public, that “If the eye of the tropical cyclone passes directly over Hong Kong, there may be a temporary lull lasting from a few minutes to several hours. This will be followed by a sudden resumption of violent winds from a different direction. Remain where you are if protected and be prepared for destructive winds and the change in wind directions.”
