Former Marine Police officer and memoirist Les Bird will be presenting a talk on his work with Vietnam War refugees in the late 1970s at the VIBE Bookstore in Mui Wo on February 15.
For more than 10 years Les patrolled the waters to the south of Hong Kong, intercepting vessels that crossed the South China Seas and the Vietnamese boat-people on board —all of whom were hoping to start a new life. Throughout his maritime career, Les carried a camera in his kitbag and, when circumstances permitted, he photographed the vessels and the people caught up in the post-war exodus.
His recently-published memoir, A Small Band of Men: An Englishman’s Adventures in Hong Kong’s Marine Police, covers his 21 years of service in the lead-up to the handover. Now a best-seller in Hong Kong and on Amazon, the book will be available for sale at the talk.
