Moving from Hong Kong to Vancouver

I engaged Relosmart for my move in view of the good reviews on their website. It turned out that the experience was very frustrating and feel that I was tricked by this company.

My move was a bit complicated given that Relosmart needed to pick up boxes (380 cu.ft.) from a mini store and stuff from my home, and all these would have to be stored in Relosmart's premises for 6 months before they were shipped to Vancouver.

Lars, the boss of Relosmart, came to my home to give me an estimate for the transient storage and the eventual move. He seemed to be efficient and professional at the time. The estimate seemed reasonable and so I decided to go along with this company.

The movers came to pack and pick up all household items in my home on the moving day. They seemed to be friendly enough. We were extrememly busy that day and so we didn't pay much attention to how they packed the items. We left HK the following day for an extended holiday.

While overseas, I received emails from Cherry Lee, manager of Relosmart, informing me that after gathering all of the items from the mini store and my home, the total volume was 100 cubic feet more than the original estimate and suggested that I should hire an additional 30' container. I rejected the proposal but she insisted I must get rid of some items . In the end, I had to dump one sofa bed, one set of framed Chinese paintings and several other boxes to meet her criteria. For that, I was charged an extra $1,500 for the handling and disposal. We were back to HK in October 2016 and requested to visit the store in Kwun Tong to retrieve some personal items. Only then (and as a second thought?!), Cherry gave us the orginal inventory form prepared by Relosmart. We learnt at the Canadian customs who stamped the inventory form on the sopt that the form is crucial for acceptance and clearance of the shipment later on by the authority.

When we finally received the shipment and opened the boxes, we were disgusted by the fact that most of the boxes packed by the movers were only half full and the rest filled with puffy wrapping papers. The total volume must thus have been increased artificially by 30 to 40%!!!

We were also shocked to see that all the boxes from the mini store were in their original packing [meant for temporary storage] and never repacked [to avoid breakage during the shipment and for Relosmart to prepare the requisite inventory form for customs clearnance]. This is one important scope of work for Relosmart and for that, we were charged accordingly for their professional service. For one thing, Relosmart never opened the boxes for preparing the inventory form. For another and not surprisingly, some ceramic figurines, a glass lamp shade and ceiling lights were found broken in the oringinal, flimsy packing meant for temporary static storage. I immediately informed and had lenghtly discussions with Cherry, she agreed to reimbuse me money for the unused carton boxes but refused to refund the manpower saved from not repacking the boxes from the mini store.

I tried the Consumers Council in HK and then took Relosmart to the Small Claims Tribunal. On the advice of the Tribunal staff, my friend who represented me decided to drop the case because the contract with Relosmart was not specific enough to have itemised the repacking of boxes from the mini store (despite that all the previous correspodences and quotation clearly indicated otherwise!). In the end, Relosmart was able to walk away without compensating us for their most UNPROFESSIONAL service.

To me, it was a terrible experience and I certainly do not wish anyone would make the same oversight as I did. If I had found this site earlier, I would definitely not hire them for the job.

We would like the opportunity to commend the amazing team you sent to us. The man who managed our move could not be faulted. To have someone in your home, handling your precious and private items, it was so lovely to have someone who instilled so much trust and confidence. By far the most hard-working, reliable and personable person we have encountered. Would recommend to anyone.

I very much appreciate all of the contact leading up to the delivery – you kept me fully informed, which was great. All of my property arrived in perfect condition. You were incredibly professional and I will use you in the future for all of my removals needs.

I was moving to Dubai from Shanghai and was a bit nervous about the timing as I was just starting my new job. These guys were very professional and flexible. It seems my contact agent went very far to answer all my questions and even showed up in my residence personally to estimate the size of my shipment. The whole experience was smooth and seamless, I would recommend them to anyone!
