January 2017 officially the hottest on record in Hong Kong

Hong Kong weather

January 2017 was officially the hottest January on record in Hong Kong, according to a statement issued by the Hong Kong Observatory this week.

In its weather round-up report, the Observatory said that the mean temperature for the month was 18.5 degrees, 2.2 degrees higher than normal. The monthly mean minimum temperature was 17.0 degrees, 2.5 degrees above normal.

The coldest day of the month was January 22, when the morning temperature dropped to just 13.6 degrees.

As well as being warm, January was also drier than usual, with only 7.8mm of rain falling throughout the month, significantly lower than the norm of 24.7mm.

The clement conditions are a complete contrast to last year's weather, which saw January 2016 confirmed as the wettest January in 129 years, and also saw freezing temperatures cause school closures across the territory.
