Window cleaning ban for domestic helpers put on hold

The Hong Kong government has announced that the planned changes to Philippine domestic helper contracts regarding window cleaning have been put on hold.
The move comes after Hong Kong officials said that the proposed new clause, which would prohibit Filipino domestic helpers from cleaning the exterior of windows, was too broad and required more detailed consideration.
The Philippine Consulate-General in Hong Kong has agreed to suspend the introduction of the clause for one month in order to allow time for further discussion. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung said that individual circumstances such as ground-floor windows and those with safety grills should be taken into consideration when revising the contracts.
The new clause was initially proposed after domestic workers called for action to be taken following the deaths of a number of workers in recent months.
