Woman jailed for nine weeks for rubbing chilli on 8-year-old's face and slapping her three times

Kowloon City Court

A Filipino woman has been sentenced to nine weeks in jail for ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person, after she was found guilty of assaulting an 8-year-old girl in her care.

At her trial in Kowloon yesterday, the court heard how Reni Ika Autria, 31, slapped the girl three times and rubbed cut peppers into her face. She reportedly doled out the punishment because the girl did not want to take a shower and was talking back to her.

Reni was taken in by the girl's family in 2012 after she found herself with nowhere to live. The girl's mother moved out of the flat in December 2014, however remained in contact with her daughter every day.

Upon learning of the incident, the girl's mother reported the incident to the police. When questioned, Reni claimed that the mother had asked her to use chilli on the girl's face.

Handing down his verdict, the magistrate called Reni's actions "cruel" and sentenced her to six weeks in jail. This was reduced to five weeks due to the delay in bringing the case to court. She was then sentenced to an additional four weeks' jail time for breaking the terms of a probation order that she had received previously for breaching the conditions of her stay in Hong Kong.
