Banner hung to protest about proposed Lantau development

Activists have hung a huge, 40 metre-wide banner on Kau Yi Chau island, off the coast of Lantau, to protest against the government's unveiling of a 3D scale model depicting the proposed East Lantau Metropolis.

The model, which reportedly cost HK$280,000 to make, was unveiled to Zhang Dejiang, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, during his recent visit to Hong Kong.

In a statement released at the weekend, the Save Lantau Alliance stated that the government "could not provide enough justifications to support the plan of establishing the ELM" and questioned the need for a third core commercial zone. It also said that the large-scale reclamation works involved would "severely damage the marine ecosystem and deteriorate the water quality." It went on to say that "the strategic road system would invade country parks and many ecologically sensitive areas, bringing huge development pressure to South Lantau and Mui Wo."

Environmental groups and other concerned parties have set up an online form for the public to send their comments to the Development Bureau. To access the form, go to
