Blue taxi vans being rolled out

In the last month, Lantau residents may have noticed some new additions to the blue taxi fleet.

These blue taxi vans are mobility cabs equipped with a ramp for wheelchair and/or luggage use.

Aiming to make life easier for the disabled, SynCab currently operates the vans for short and long haul journeys in the Lantau area. The vehicles can accommodate either one wheelchair user with two additional passengers or four passengers. WiFi and USB charging ports are available in the cabs, and they also take credit card payments.

The plight of blue taxis is familiar to Lantau residents as, according to the Transport Department, a mere 50 blue taxi are in service as opposed to the four-figure number in the New Territories. This figure is seemingly meagre with the continuous development of Tung Chung and recent taxi access to Discovery Bay North, as well as the additional strain placed on the fleet by tourism on the island.

Could these new additions to the blue taxis suggest that the current blue taxi situation is soon to improve?
