Formerly an annual event in Discovery Bay and of great importance to the local tennis community, the revived tournament is the first in hopefully a series to be held at least twice a year. About 70 kids aged 6 to 14 years participated.
Doubles events were held on Saturday followed by singles events on Sunday. Due to undesirable weather however, Sunday's singles events were left hanging with only a few matches left to go. The remaining matches will be completed on May 1.
The partial results of the DBRC include:
8 & Under Doubles
Champions: Ved Hardas & Emma Kwan
Runner-up: Conor Broadley & Stan Fillingham
10 & Under Doubles
Champions: Naomi Hagi & Menasha Herath
Runner-up: Carl Loeffler & Julian Barker
12 & Under Doubles
Champions: Harry Hines & Erica Hagi
Runner-up: Aryan Jain & Lucas Maj
14 & Under Doubles
Champions: Ben Baird & Andrea Boni
Runner-up: Suneh Bhatia & Arul Murali
10 & Under Singles
Champion: Julian Barker
Runner-up: Carl Loeffler
"It was a significant event for all the players," says Ajit Gidwani, DBRC Tennis Coach and the tournament's organiser. "For the more experienced players it was their chance to compete against their friends to be the best in DB. For other players it was their first taste of competition and a major stepping stone in their tennis. It was great for them to have their first competitive taste of tennis in DB in the comfort of their coaches and parents along side."
"The DBRC Junior Tennis Tournament will resume this Sunday at 9:30am.
"Bruno Loeffler and Harry Hines are locked in a battle for the 14 & Under Singles title with Bruno leading 3-0 40-40 when the rain suspended play last weekend. The match is only up to 4 games and sudden death deuce. Will Harry be able to find a way to win the first deciding point and stage a come back? Or will Bruno make quick work of Harry and win just one more point to claim the title?
"In the 12 & Under Singles, Carl Loeffler must beat Erica Hagi in the final round robin stage match to stand a chance of entering the semi-finals where Harry Hines and Lucas Maj await. Should Carl beat Erica, Erica, Carl and Aryan Jain will all have 3 match wins in their group and the semi-finalists will be decided by the number of games won overall."
