Cheaper airfares beginning next month as Hong Kong drops fuel surcharge
- Written by arounddb, 20 January 2016
From February 1, passengers booking outbound flights from Hong Kong will not have to pay fuel surcharges, following a drop in global oil prices.
Passenger fuel surcharges for January 2016 are at $109 for long haul flights and $24 for regional flights, as stated by Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Department. The cancellation takes place roughly sixteen years after fuel levies were first implemented in Hong Kong.
Those who have booked flights prior to February 1 but are travelling after, including many travelling during the Lunar New Year holidays, will not be receiving fuel surcharge refunds, however.
Airlines from other territories have stopped levying fuel surcharges, with Japanese carriers reported to follow suit. Hong Kong residents may enjoy an increasing variety of cheaper travel options this 2016.
