The population of Tung Chung is set to swell with an extra 1400 flats to be built under its expansion plan.
The Standard reported the Development Bureau new flats will come after the Education Department released some land for housing.
The latest Tung Chung New Town Extension plan will see 49,400 flats provided to accommodate a population of about 144,400, instead of the 48,000 flats mooted last year.
About 63 per cent will be subsidized housing while the remainder will be private flats.
The Development Bureau will seek consultation on the HK$729.5 million funding to engage consultants to undertake detailed design and site investigation works.
The Standard reported the Bureau will seek funding approval from the Finance Committee after consulting the public works subcommittee early next year. Detailed design could start in mid-2016.
Most of the flats will be built in Tung Chung East, with 5,200 subsidized units and 3,400 private units in Tung Chung West.
The first population intake is targeted for 2023 with 2030 set as the completion date. It will see Tung Chung's population grow from 80,000 to more than 268,000 in 2030.
Two more MTR stations will be built, Tung Chung East and Tung Chung West.
Most of the new land in Tung Chung East will be the result of reclamation, while the western part will involve 13 hectares of land resumption, with fewer than 100 residents reportedly affected.
