Lantau Island's Tung Chung an air pollution hotspot

Lantau's Tung Chung has emerged at No.3 on a list of places in Hong Kong with bad air quality.

The South China Morning Post has reported that analysis by a green group had shown Tuen Mun, Kwun Tong and Tung Chung spent more hours exposed to bad air this year than anywhere else in the city.

The rating was based on the frequency of hours the areas recorded a "high" reading on the Air Quality Health Index. The only air monitoring station on Lantau is located at Tung Chung.

Tuen Mun recorded 394 hours, followed by Kwun Tong with 344 hours and Tung Chung with 334 hours, according to Green Power.

Authorities recommend children, elderly people and those with heart or respiratory illnesses should reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities when there is a "high" reading.

The non-profit group Green Power also said ozone pollution was an issue, the South China Morning Post reported.

The group's spokesman said additional emission sources in the region - such as the planned third runway at the airport, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai Macau bridge, new boundary-crossing facilities and waste incinerators - would add to ozone pollution.
