HK Indian community targeted by hoax calls

Members of the Indian community have been victims of receiving hoax calls from callers pretending to be from the Consulate General of India.

The caller reportedly asks for personal details, after falsely claiming that the reason for the call is because the wrong information has been provided to the immigration authorities of Hong Kong or to the Consulate General of India.

The caller then asks for money to be transferred and threatens serious action in India or Hong Kong if this is not done.

The Consulate General of India has spoken out to say that none of the calls are genuine. Should you receive a similar call, they strongly advise you not to share personal details and to collect as much information about the hoax caller as possible so that you can immediately report the matter to the police, or Mr Virender Sharma, Consular Officer of the Consulate at 3970 9944 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Meanwhile, Tung Chung residents have also been receiving hoax calls after publicly sharing their contact information on the Tung Chung Community Facebook Group, when looking to buy or sell items or rent apartments.

Residents said that they had been receiving No Caller ID calls from 11:45pm onwards – even at 1am, claiming the person on the other end continued to call continuously and when answered, they “muttered nonsense”.

Reports to the Tung Chung Police have been filed in regards to this case. If you are still receiving similar calls, it is advised that you take the same approach of reporting it to your community police station.
