Have your say on schooling in DB

Read this letter from Islands District Council Member (Discovery Bay) Amy Yung and offer your opinion on schooling in DB.

Dear DB residents,

Education is a key priority for all parents.

There are two main private international schools and one Government-aided local primary school in Discovery Bay at present. Both private international schools are through-train schools, providing primary and secondary education. Unfortunately, school places are at a premium, both in terms of space and cost.

When the Government approved the further development of Discovery Bay North in 2000, it recognized the need to provide a more rounded education mix and required that the developer set aside land for two new schools. The first, Discovery College, was built in 2006. The second, a Government subsidized local school, is to be built by the developer at the empty site opposite Greenvale Village. However, no progress has been made after 15 years, other than to identify the school-sponsoring body.

The multi-cultural nature of Discovery Bay would provide an excellent environment for a Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) school, run with a mix of local and international curriculum and offering strong Chinese-language training.

An example of a DSS school is the YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College in Tung Chung, where many of our children have completed their secondary education in either English (GCE) or Chinese (DSE). The school uses English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI ), with Chinese-related subjects taught in Chinese. School fees average HK$ 30,000/year for secondary education.

I would like to invite you to fill out the questionnaire in order to gather DB residents’ opinions regarding primary and secondary school places in our community.  The information gathered will be analysed and presented to the Education Bureau. No identifying personal information is required to complete this questionnaire.

After the completion of the questionnaire, please send it to me through:

 - my mailbox at the southern exit of DB Pier,

 -  by fax (2541 5660),

 - by email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), or

 - by post  to 21/F, Fortune House, 61 Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong at your earliest convenience.

Thank you in advance for your time. Please feel free to forward this email to your friends and neighbours in DB.

Yours sincerely,

Amy Yung
