Gift ideas for newborns (that will also make mum happy)

Joan Szeto, owner of Toys Club, advises Katrina Mercado what to buy for baby’s first Christmas.

Did 2018 bring with it a new bundle of joy? Perhaps you know someone who has just welcomed a little one into the world? Are you asking yourself, What should I gift a newborn? What are some gifts that both mum and baby will enjoy?

“People get super excited about baby’s first Christmas and always want to buy a very special gift,” Toys Club owner Joan Szeto opens. “Oftentimes, they want to buy something big to show their love and affection, which is lovely. But it’s important to be practical. Since you spend a lot of money on these gifts, you’ll want to make sure that they last longer than just a few months.

“Popular gifts that ‘grow’ with baby include tiny soft toys that he can hug all day and all night; big mobile toys that can be hung on a stroller, car seat or crib, and activity-based/ educational toys.

The best toys adapt as baby grows,” Joan continues. “For instance, the VTech Grow and Go Ride-on, which transforms from rocker to ride-on. Equipped with an LED display that flashes up letters, numbers and animations to reinforce l e a r n i n g , it’s designed to introduce the alphabet, colours, shapes and numbers through fun phrases, silly sound effects and melodies.”

The best, most thoughtful gifts are always the ones that come from the heart, and with this in mind, you might choose to put together a selection of items that baby (and mum) can use and enjoy every day. Fill a pint-sized Xmas hamper with bibs, pacifiers, teethers, rattles, even toiletries and wet wipes. Alternatively, you can stick with tradition and gift baby a beautiful fluffy blanket and a couple of board books.

“Finding that special something to take the new arrival from birth and beyond is no easy task, so decide whether you want to gift practical staples, educational toys or items that they will treasure forever,” says Joan. “Baby will look back at the photos of his first Christmas and he’s sure to look adorable, which is actually all that matters!”
